Shooting With Jim Hammond Savage Model 12 .223
Savage Model 12 .223 Varminter with BSA Platinum 36X44 Scope and full length Sunshield

I have people ask me, "what is your favorite gun" and my reply is "ALL OF THEM" but this Savage Model 12 is up there in the top one or two for all around FUN TO SHOOT. This rifle shoots as straight as a laser light, is easy to clean, is built like a tank as far as durability, has a solid bolt when it closes, the AccuTrigger™ trigger is fantastic, has almost no felt recoil, is beautiful and you can shoot it all day for not a whole lot of money. AND with the right load can shoot 3 shots and make one hole.
This rifle has brought me many hours of Fun Shooting and reloading in search of the perfect bullet for this rifle. I have tried about a 1/2 dozen different powders, 15 or 20 different bullets and a few different primers. And to date I have found a few loads that I have been happy with but I am still in search of the perfect load.
This one has a 1 in 7 inch twist, which allows me to shoot heavier bullets, up to 80 grain. I tried a few 90 grain and had poor performance with them, so stick to bullets in the 65 to 80 grain weight and you should have good success.
Below is one that has made it to my acceptable loads for this Savage Model 12 Varminter in .223. I shot several factory loads and the best that I shot out of this gun was the Hornady 223 Rem 75 gr TAP® FPD™, with groups in the 3/4 to 1 inch at 100 yards.
